SMART and Clever Devices Moving Forward on ITS Infrastructure Upgrades

Detroit, MI (February 9, 2023) – The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) and Clever Devices are moving forward on a major refresh of the agency’s onboard ITS technology. The project’s scope includes a refresh of existing CAD/AVL technology, including the addition of robust Disruption Management capabilities, hardening the existing Celrado communications infrastructure, and implementing an ongoing training program for new and existing employees. With these improvements, SMART aims to improve overall customer satisfaction by providing more accurate real-time arrival predictions and schedule data and to improve employee training in alignment with their commitment to embracing technology.

Clever Devices’ Disruption Management module for CleverCAD enables users to react quickly to service disruptions that occur due to inclement weather, traffic or road conditions, or vehicle maintenance issues. Users can quickly make service changes to address issues, and all changes are immediately reflected on affected vehicles and in our BusTime™ real-time passenger information system. This ensures that both operators and passengers get updated information in real time, improving customer satisfaction.

SMART has a daily ridership of 44,000 and serves the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, with 47 routes, a mixed diesel and electric fleet of around 260 vehicles, and paratransit and microtransit services.
