Clever Devices Partners with Transit to Deliver New App-Based GTFS-RT Detour Integration

Woodbury, NY and Montreal, QC (May 21, 2025) — Clever Devices, the leader in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), is proud to announce a partnership with Transit, North America’s leading app for public transportation riders, that marks a significant step forward in rider communication and service transparency. Through this collaboration, Clever Devices is now making detour data available to riders through the GTFS-RT Trip Modifications standard, an industry milestone.

This advancement allows transit agencies that have partnered with Transit to clearly communicate real-time service disruptions, detours, and stop changes to riders directly on their mobile devices. Agencies such as Santa Cruz METRO, Pierce Transit, Kitsap Transit, NORTA, and GRTC are among the first to launch this solution to improve the rider experience.

“At Transit, we’re big believers in using open data and the GTFS standard to improve the experience of riding public transit. So, we’re excited that transit agencies can now share detour information from Clever Devices directly in Transit via GTFS-RT Trip Modifications,” said Guillaume Campagna, Transit’s Chief Technology Officer. “This is an important initiative that gives riders accurate, up-to-date, easy-to-understand information about detours, right on their smartphone.”

Why It Matters

  • Greater Clarity for Riders: Riders can instantly see if their trip is impacted by a detour, then quickly locate the relocated stop and route, improving the passenger experience and reducing confusion.
  • Improved Agency Communication: Any agency using Clever Devices’ GTFS-RT feed can now deliver this critical information through their preferred public-facing tools, including the Transit app.
  • Data Transparency: This initiative reflects Clever Devices’ commitment to supporting open data standards like GTFS-RT and meeting customer needs through flexible, future-ready solutions.

“For years, our customers have asked for better ways to communicate real-time detour information,” said Patrick Benjamin, VP of Product Management at Clever Devices. “As soon as the GTFS-RT spec supported it, we were ready. We reached out to Transit—the leading app for transit riders—and partnered to validate our solution across multiple agencies.”

This achievement builds on Clever’s long-standing support for detour visibility through its BusTime platform, a feature first introduced in 2017, and now expands it through GTFS-RT to meet the evolving needs of transit agencies and riders alike. This partnership is just the beginning. As part of a longer-term roadmap, Clever Devices and Transit will continue working together with a core group of agencies to refine prediction accuracy and enhance the rider experience even further.

At Clever Devices, our mission is to empower agencies with the tools they need to serve their communities. This collaboration is a testament to our flexibility, customer focus, and leadership in open, real-time transit data.
